College and university rankings are rankings of institutions in higher education which have been ranked on the basis of various combinations of various factors. None of the rankings give a comprehensive overview of the strengths of the institutions ranked because all select a range of easily quantifiable characteristics to base their results on. The Times Higher Education World University Rankings are the only global performance tables that judge research-intensive universities across all their core missions: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook. We use 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons, trusted by students, academics, university leaders, industry and governments. Universities can also be excluded if 80 per cent or more of their activity is exclusively in one of our eight subject areas. Data collection Institutions provide and sign off their institutional data for use in the rankings. On the rare occasions when a particular data point is not provided we enter a low estimate between the average value of the indicators and the lowest value reported: the 25th percentile of the other indicators. Getting to the final result Moving from a series of specific data points to indicators, and finally to a total score for an institution, requires us to match values that represent fundamentally different data.

Times Higher Education chose to partner with educational and careers advice company QS to supply the data. After the rankings, Times Higher Education took the decision to break from QS and signed an agreement with Thomson Reuters to provide the data for its annual World University Rankings from onwards. The publication developed a new rankings methodology in consultation with its readers, its editorial board and Thomson Reuters. Thomson Reuters will collect and analyse the data used to produce the rankings on behalf of Times Higher Education. The first ranking was published in September Commenting on Times Higher Education's decision to split from QS, former editor Ann Mroz said: "universities deserve a rigorous, robust and transparent set of rankings — a serious tool for the sector, not just an annual curiosity.
It asks scholars to name no more than 15 universities that they believe are the best for research and teaching, based on their own experience. The result is a list of the top most powerful global university brands as judged by those best-placed to know the most about excellence in higher education. The survey data will be used alongside 11 objective indicators to help create the THE World University Rankings , which will be unveiled in September But, while North America continues to dominate the table, several of the region's most reputable institutions have been outshone by leading Asian brands for the first time. Leading universities in Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands have also lost ground as universities in Asia have become more prominent brands on the global stage.
